Senator Eric Schmitt has introduced a bill to put another $30 billion into modernizing air traffic control and airport infrastructure. Here's a quick rundown of what's in it and why it matters to the GA community.

What's Being Proposed
Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) has introduced the Modern Skies Act, which would add $30 billion to the effort to modernize the nation's air traffic control system and airports. That would come on top of the $12.5 billion Congress has already approved.
Where the Money Would Go
The funding is split into three $10 billion buckets:
Digital architecture: Better tools for keeping aircraft separated, a more resilient telecommunications backbone for ATC, and new traffic flow management and AI technology.
Airport infrastructure: Replacing aging control towers, airport facilities, and runways.
Transitional airports: A new grant program for airports serving roughly 5 to 25 million passengers a year that struggle to access capital.
The bill would also give the FAA more flexibility to move funds so it can keep rolling out new radars, radios, electronic flight strips, and surface awareness tools.
What It Means for Owners and Pilots
This isn't a maintenance rule change, so you won't see a direct effect on your inspection schedule. For GA owners and operators, the benefits would be indirect. A more reliable ATC system could mean fewer outages and delays, and better surface awareness and modernized runways could improve safety. The bill has backing from nearly 60 aviation organizations, including AOPA and EAA.
Where It Stands
The bill has been introduced, and it still has to move through Congress. Officials say it's the third pillar of the administration's plan to update air traffic control, following the $12.5 billion already approved. We'll keep an eye on it.
Final Note
